Jobs for People with Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a condition in which the lining that typically grows inside the uterus grows elsewhere in the body. This causes intense pain, heavy periods, and even fertility issues for the people involved.

Living with endometriosis has a significant impact on a person’s life. It can affect their relationships, social life, and work. Some people may find that endometriosis stops them from keeping a full-time job, due to the persistent symptoms, and others may find that they need to drop their hours or consider working from home.

The bottom line is that endometriosis is a condition that needs to be supported at work. With adequate support, it is possible for people living with the condition to do any job they want to do. Fewer sacrifices need to be made on the part of the disabled job seeker when the employers on the other side put the right pillars of support in place.

On this page, we want to talk a little more about the conditions needed for the best jobs for people with endometriosis.

Flexibility

Endometriosis symptoms typically flare in severity related to the person’s menstrual cycle. This means that people living with the condition may feel more unwell on certain days and weeks of the month than others.

To help manage endometriosis and full-time work, flexibility is a very beneficial quality for a job to have. If there is flexibility around work hours and how they can be accrued, this allows people with endometriosis to manage their condition and look after their own well-being without having absences from work.

Look out for flexible working hours, flexi-time, compressed hours, job sharing, and other forms of flexible contracts to find this in your next opportunity.

Hybrid Options

Hybrid working options mean that you can work at home sometimes and in the office/physical working space sometimes. Different roles will manage the hybrid nature in different ways, but the general rule of thumb is that it isn’t all at home or in-person working, there is a mix of both.

Having a hybrid role can be great for people with endometriosis as it allows them to stay home and manage pain and symptoms when they need to, without them needing to sacrifice networking and in-person relationships either.

Disability-friendly Employers

When it comes to working with any disability, having a diverse employer makes a significant difference. Disability-friendly employers will be willing and able to make the reasonable adjustments you need to be comfortable at work. They will also be able to create an inclusive working environment around you so that you will be safe and accepted at work.
